Marine life of Tetiaroa
TETIAROA: WHAT TO DO & SEE

Frigatebird
The majestic Frigatebird is found on Tetiaroa

If you are one of the lucky ones to visit the enchanted atoll of Tetiaroa you will be keen to discover all the interesting things to do and see there.

The first thing you will notice is this island is not developed at all! Its peaceful pristine natural setting and absolute secluded charm are what attracted Marlon Brando to this atoll, and during his years of ownership here he did everything he could to keep it that way.

To that end, compared to some other Society Islands, there are relatively few activities and sights to do and experience on Tetiaroa- but the choices that are available are wonderful ones indeed...

First and foremost, this atoll is all about relaxing and chilling out. Many people just want to grab a towel and a good book and head out to the nearest coconut tree to relax.

When ready, there's also swimming, walking around and exploring the many tiny motus which comprise the area, snorkeling, scuba diving, and checking out Bird Island.

This page is your starting guide to what to do and see on Tetiaroa!

TST Note:
In the days when the Hotel Tetiaroa Village was open, there were regularly arranged combinations of the activities and sights described on this page. For now, until the opening of the new resort "The Brando", visitors to Tetiaroa are left to their own devices when it comes to these experiences. Currently, the only organized activity planning on Tetiaroa is done by the Sailing and Charter boat companies which visit the atoll.

Sooty TernBrown Boody ChickBIRD ISLAND

Fabulous "Bird Island" is the undisputed highlight of sightseeing activities on Tetiaroa.

This special motu called Tahuna Iti (the bird's island) can be reached by outrigger canoe from the islands only developed area, the currently closed down grounds of Tetiaroa Village.

It is home to spectacular species of birds such as the Red-footed Booby, black and brown Noddies, the Sooty tern, and the Frigatebird, among others.

SNORKELING & SCUBA DIVINGSnorkeling Tetiaroa

Tetiaroa is an underwater paradise and a lovely spot to spend a day of exploring the corals and underwater sights of the lagoon.
Since there are no open passes to the open sea from the lagoon which completely surrounds Tetiaroa, the water is exceptionally warm and the unspoiled waters home to a dazzling array of colorful marine life

Snorkeling is by far the preferred choice for most visitors due to the fact you only need a mask and snorkel... For those wanting to scuba dive here, you'll be rewarded if you can get your gear here.

The only way to scuba dive Tetiaroa is by means of your own sailboat and equipment or with a charter boat company that specializes in scuba diving around Tahiti.

See our Sailing, Boat Charters, & Marine Information section or the Tahiti Watersports section for more details about Tetiaroa scuba opportunites.

SAILING & BOAT CHARTERS

Tetiaroa's close proximity to Tahiti, (only 36.5 miles (59 km), yet total remote solitude and immense beauty, make it an alluring destination for sailing enthusiasts and day touring charter companies .

Please see our Sailing, Boat Charters, & Marine Information section for all the details and charter choices.

MISCELLANEOUS

Alternative to the above listed activities on Tetiaroa include relaxing on a motu with a good book, towel, and picnic basket, or just walking around and enjoying the solitide of the secluded motus. You can also fish on Tetiaroa, get lost in photography, or take a long nap in the shade of a coconut tree.

TOURS & CRUISES

None of the large Tahitian water cruiseliners debark on Tetiaroa atoll, although some of them do come close enough for viewing.

Please see our Tour Packages, Cruiselines, & Travel Agents section on the Tahiti/ Papeete website for more information.
